I was just reading about the philosophy of history in Mark Gilderhus' History and Historians, in particular the positivist vs. Basically there are two fundamental thought processes in analyzing history. On the one hand, positivism would see history studied through scientific and mathematical methods.

One would examine history to determine rational cause-effect relationships that could be applied generally. To me this is unrealistic hogwash.

You cannot use math to determine the outcomes of human events.

Human beings aren't always rational. The idealists would study history by first examining the actions taken, then attempting to empathize with the historical actors. To get inside their heads and judge their actions this way. By analyzing the primary source documents and drawing reasonable conclusions about past individuals states of mind.

This adds the crucial human element lacking in the positivist equation and in my opinion makes history worth studying.
